The New York Staff Band's Future All-Stars

2008

The NYSB's Future All-Stars Weekend for 2008 was held March13-15

Many of The Eastern Territory’s finest young musicians joined forces with the famous New York Staff Band for an intense weekend of rehearsal, performance, and spiritual renewal. The Future All-Stars Weekend, now in its fifth year, gave Salvationists, ages 13-18, the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the most accomplished musicians in The Salvation Army. As a result, the younger players gained inspiration, confidence, and the desire to excel – both in their musical skills and in their relationship with God.

Says Allison Ward, of Greater New York, “Not only did I learn how to play challenging music with great instructors but I experienced Christ in the music we played, in the conversations we had, in the prayer time with our prayer partners . . . it blessed my heart.”

Held this year in Suffern, New York, the Future All-Stars Weekend is hosted by the New York Staff Band under the direction of Bandmaster Ronald Waiksnoris.  "Future All-Stars weekend has become a highlight on the NYSB calendar. The young musicians who attend are highly motivated and really excel in the intense musical and spiritual atmosphere. This years FAW was inspirational."

This year’s theme, “Victory,” was suited perfectly to the vision of the leaders and the need of the delegates. Throughout the weekend, each musical selection confirmed and provided more understanding into the certainty of our victory in Christ. For example, “In Christ Alone,” a euphonium solo featuring Aaron Vanderweele and the NYSB, reminded hearers of the lyrics:

No power of Hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand.
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I stand.

Likewise, the Future All-Stars declared their dependency on Christ for spiritual victory by singing from Rock of Ages:

Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Not only were the students eager to rehearse, they were anxious to learn as much as they could during the periods of devotion and prayer. Territorial Youth Leaders, Majors Ivan and Christine Rock, provided teaching on the subject of victorious prayer. In doing so, they were delighted to find that the group enjoyed partnering in prayer, as each student had the opportunity to be lifted up individually in prayer by a member of the staff band.

During the Sunday morning holiness meeting at the School for Officer Training, the Future All-Stars were quick to give their testimonies – and to respond to the message. Beautiful music rang out throughout the room, with musical offerings from the Future All-Stars, the New York Staff Band, and representatives from the school. And the altars were lined with delegates, eager to claim victory for themselves and for their generation.

A huge crowd of Salvationists and Army friends filled the gymnasium at The SFOT for the finale concert. Territorial Secretary for Program, Major Richard Munn, brought meaningful and inspiring direction to the meeting, reminding listeners of the meaning behind each selection. After a range of show-stopping selections, the New York Staff Band concluded the event with a rousing rendition of “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and a vocal benediction that brought tears to people’s eyes. As they left that afternoon, many concluded that this concert filled them with joy – and a hope for the future of Salvation Army musicianship.
