North American Brass Celebration
Preparations for a historic occasion are underway in Long Beach California. On May 21st 2016 The Western Territory Staff Band will be host to The Canadian Staff Band, The Chicago Staff Band, The New York Staff Band, and The Southern Territorial Staff Band, for a glorious day of praise through brass!
The day will kick off at 11AM with music from The Western Territory Youth Band, along with the Southern California and Sierra Del Mar Youth Bands on the patio of The Terrace Theater.
The theater lobby will feature displays from each band and from various vendors, with sheet music, instruments and albums for sale, along with a new book by Dr. Ronald Holz that chronicles the history of these five North American bands.
At 2:00pm, each Staff Band will present a ‘solo’ thirty minute concert. The concerts will feature some new music along with some established “Salvation Army” classics.
“What you see and hear will be what the bands normally share as they minister on a regular basis,” said Bandmaster Neil Smith, the West’s territorial music and worship development secretary. The bands will also take this opportunity to feature some of their own local composers.
The Western Territory Staff Band has commissioned a number of new works for this special occasion.
At 7:00pm, the Gala Concert will feature new music commissioned by The Western Territory Staff Band from James Curnow, Philip Wilby, Stephen Bulla, Kevin Larsson, William Himes and Robert Redhead to mark this historic occasion. All five bands will join together for the evening.
After the concert all attendees are asked to join the bands on the patio for dessert. A great way to round of what will be a wonderful occasion.
