Having led a workshop and conducted a Music Sunday at Mid-Columbia and Spokane Corps respectively, it was with eagerness I traveled to Portland for the final Ministry Concert of the NYSB's Cascade Divisional visit. What another great blessing of Salvationist Worship, totally whetting my appetite for the following day's Seattle experience.
Most of the band enjoyed scenic travel, some catching some "zzz's" prior to lunch at the Seattle White Center Corps - recently rebuilt, and on the cutting edge of ministry in SW Seattle . Opportunity afforded outdoor elevator ascent of the Space Needle (including a very nervous Dorothy Gates!) and on a beautiful day, the exquisite panorama of lakes and mountains was appreciated.
I extended greetings to the band and it's recently appointed Executive Officer, Major Richard Munn, after a rousing All Glorious introduction. William Gordon, who resides in the NW Division, enjoyed his composition The Great Revival . Bandmaster Waiksnoris subsequently and graciously offered him the baton.
Synonymous with the NYSB, Thomas Mack skillfully led finely tuned choral renditions of Peace like a River and Ride the Chariot , as Major Munn expanded upon a tranquil peaceful theme.
Kenneth Downie's Music for a Joyful Occasion, excellent command of Brian Bowen's My Comfort and Strength and a Burt Mason/Dorothy Gates trombone duet by Dudley Bright delighted the anticipatively appreciative audience.
Gordon Ward shared Crossroad as well as a cornet trio with Chris Ward and Jeff Barrington. What a delight to hear Aaron VanderWeele's technically faultless rendition of Norman Audoire's euphonium solo, We'll All Shout Hallelujah . Aaron is originally from the Western Territory before beginning his tenure with the NYSB. In a return to his "home" territory has developed such a beautiful tone and command of the instrument reminiscent of mentor Chris Mallett, who would have been proud of such a fine prodigy.
The evening concluded with a magnificent rendition of Glorifico Aeternum (Dean Jones) with bravado, testimony, and fusion as the band exceeded high expectations - a great tribute of fine witness by expert musicians sharing their Faith. A fitting vocal benediction, Rock of Ages , embraced the message gratefully received, with a request to return northwestwards soon, NYSB!
