In celebrating its 125th year, the New York Staff Band offers a balanced recorded programme that salutes the past and embraces new music written especially for the occasion.

The anniversary year prior to the release of this recording (2011-2012) has been filled with musical activity that underscores the bands’ continuing ministry, this album’s repertoire reflecting those efforts. International trips included a retreat and concert with the Canadian Staff Band and a short tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland which was followed by participation in The International Staff Band’s 120th anniversary celebrations (ISB120) in London with all of the Salvation Army’s staff bands. The 125th anniversary concert was held in New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall at which some of this disc’s repertoire was performed for the first time.

Music of Thanksgiving and Hope

"The New York Staff Band's dynamic program of six representative concert works in the period 1950 - 2010 demonstrates a major tension present in Salvation Army band literature: the desire to proclaim a clear and simple gospel message through accessible songs versus the increasingly sophisticated symphonic scale works designed to challenge the experienced listener on multiple levels. The pieces on this disc succeed on both levels and have been joined together under a noble theme: music that projects hope; and music that expresses the highest aspirations of the Christian heart, thanksgiving and praise."

-Dr. Ronald Holz

New York, New York

The NYSB has always sought to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ via entertaining music that also carries a clear spiritual message or application. That has been particularly true of the NYSB under its current director, Ronald Waiksnoris. This particular program highlights this progressive pattern and celebrates three generations of British arrangers: Goff Richards, Peter Graham and Dorothy Gates.

Ceaseless Service

One hundred twenty years of continuous service is a momentous milestone for the New York Staff Band. The band’s history reflects a long line of musicians who have played music to bring honor to God, including many fine composers and arrangers.
